Facts About Tennis Elbow in relation to Racket Sports
Medical Treatment
• A Doctor or Physiotherapist should be consulted if you already have it.
• Medical advice is normally medium to long term rest.
• Occasionally a steroid injection is given but this is only a temporary fix and does not prevent the symptoms returning.
Causes
Other than failing to warming up properly prior to whacking the ball (or shuttlecock) as hard as you can the major cause is actually the characteristics of your racket. Often people get tennis elbow shortly after buying a new racket or changing something on the racket.
The following are racquet characteristics that often cause tennis elbow and can be adjusted by a Professional Racket Technician:
Overall weight (lighter = potential tennis elbow)
Racket Balance (head heavy = potential tennis elbow)
Strings Type (hard hitting strings = potential tennis elbow)
Tension (high tension = potential tennis elbow and less power)
Grip (small and / or lack of cushioning = potential tennis elbow)
What we can do?
Using state of the art technology the dynamic string tension, balance, weight and swing weight of a racket can be measured and then adjusted. In most cases this can be done without noticeably changing the playing characteristics of the racket. For example more weight can be added without changing the balance as long as you know where to put the weight. In this case you will not really notice the increased weight. We will also assess your grip size / type and the strings currently being used.
Other Uses
Love your old racket ? Do you have an old racket that you love but cannot find a replacement that plays the same? We can adjust a new racket to feel almost the same as your old as long as the new racket is not a lot heavier. We do not shave rackets.
